Great Finds

Last week, Tori, the hostess from Thoughtfully Simple contacted me about one of my 2008 Valentine's Day tablescape. Not only was I giddy because of this contact (as she simply has great taste) but I was also delighted, because through her site I ran across all sorts of other very cool entertaining related web stores and blogs.
The little window shoppe was the first I visited. Such cute stuff. Emily's blog also features daily finds. She also has a sweet shoppes area where shop owners can feature their own little shops - either for free, if you link back to her site, or for a $10 fee, if you prefer not to link. I jumped right on the $10 deal and am currently featured in the parties and events area of her sweet shoppes. So excited.

Then I ran across the polka dot market and more cutesy items. This site really makes me wish that I had kids to buy all of these way too fun dotted items for. Sally even has a Polka Dot Birthday blog which features, you guessed it, polka dotted birthday items. All are way too darling.

Through the sweet shoppes at little window shoppe, I ran across the above site , pinkfrosting. Wow! They are an Australian based event planning site which features pages and pages and pages of great party and event planning ideas - for all of life's celebrations, as they put it. Picture the event planning portions of marthastewart.com on fun and playful - yet harmless - steroids. I've only had time to briefly browse this site and blog but I so immediately marked it as one of my favorites.

Winter's Approaching

Although I realize we are still a couple of months from winter (as fall hasn't even officially arrived!), I've come to the realization that before we know it winter will be upon us again. For me, one of the first official signs of impending winter is when I must begin wearing closed-toe shoes again - and guess what I'm wearing today? Yep, you guessed it. My piggly wigglies are enclosed (and feeling mighty claustrophobic today - especially since I also had to put on knee highs) for the first time in months. It's cloudy and chilly here in Indiana and from the looks outside it doesn't look like winter is too far from arriving.

In honor of this, and the fact that I recently added some winter products to my shop, I thought I'd post a little winter wedding inspiration blog. I'm getting chills just thinking of it - and not chills of excitement but chills because I literally shiver all winter. :)

I love winter weddings that utilize the color scheme of blue and white. (Probably why I chose these colors for my own winter wedding.) I recently found the above invites in Etsy and thought that they would work perfectly for a winter wedding affair. I love scroll and damask patterns and this one is fun yet very elegant at the same time and I'm really into rounded corners on stationery these days. And doesn't the front and back of the envelope just scream 'Open me now?'!!!

During my own winter wedding I also utilized feathers. I wish I had found this bouquet idea (available at another Etsy shop) before my wedding. The feathers fanned around the flowers are just too beautiful and the satin wrap is also way too gorgeous.

Now, the above is actually a photo from my wedding. When my parents were married (over 3o years ago) they also had a winter wedding. My mom had her bridesmaids carry muffs instead of flowers so I decided to carry this over into my wedding. My mom handmade each of the muffs for my sisters/bridesmaids. I also had the florist attach a little arrangement of flowers to each of the muffs. Thought this was an original yet beautiful way to stray from the typical bouquets. (Plus I still put mine out each Christmas - minus the flowers, of course.)

Wouldn't the above make very cool boutonnieres. Now I'm usually not a huge fan of faux flowers but this winter boutonniere utilizes dried flowers and feathers, and it's catching my eye.

And, isn't this purse just fabulous? The attached little broach is also too cute.

And this ring pillow - yep, it's to die for too. Yet another Etsy shop. (Seriously wish I had known about Etsy before my own winter nuptials).

What winter wedding would be complete without a shawl or cape? The above is a capette so it's a bit shorter than a cape but a bit larger than a shawl. Of course it's also in the feather theme.

What a wonderful way for a bride to make a dramatic statement. Isn't this headpiece just too feathery and fabulous? I picture it matching a very basic, and slender, bridal gown perfectly.

The above is another picture from my winter wedding. Before I'd even chosen my wedding colors or theme I was doing research online and learned that birds were a symbol of love and that they are considered messengers of good things to come. With this being said, I knew that I wanted to integrate birds into my wedding. I happened to find the above hand blown bird ornaments in blue and white and thus I decided to choose blue and white as my colors and integrate feathers into my theme.

Seating (and thank you) cards were attached and they were clipped into a white flocked lit Christmas tree. I loved this idea as the ornaments were something that I knew that guests would actually use (and not just toss after the wedding) and that they would also think of us for years to come when they hung these pretty little ornaments on their tree.

The only problem with my thinking was that I fell in love with the birds above at a retail shop (Parisian) and they ran out in my local area (I visited every shop) before I had enough for my guests. I luckily found some similar birds (but only in white) at another local retailer and guess what? They didn't have enough either. So I ended up going to every single one of these stores within an hour and a half radius (one here and two there, etc.) until I had enough. Luckily I had a small wedding or I would have been out of luck.

If I had thought about it then, I would have saved myself a lot of time by purchasing them all online in one fail swoop. (Yes, I am now offering similar handblown glass bird ornaments in my online shop. I am also able to attach seating and thank you cards.)

Yet another wedding photo - our little bird themed cake. It utilized crystallized twigs, craft birds, edible shimmery snow and glitter, and a tree trunk as a cake stand.

Isn't the above tablecloth just too beautiful for a winter wedding. Love the texture and pearls - kind of like snow, okay - not really but it it would be perfect for a wintry white wedding.

Hopefully you enjoyed my winter wedding inspiration and that I haven't made you too depressed that summer, and warm weather, is almost officially over. :(

Pretty Penned Pinwheels

I just can't hold in my excitement over the photos featured in this blog. (Believe it or not, I just received them literally minutes ago and here I am already blogging about them!) I recently connected with Lisa from Pen & Ink Calligraphy through Etsy. She was looking for clever ways to feature her beautiful calligraphy on her website and I've been looking for a recommended calligrapher so the match was perfect.

I recently sent her some samples of my pinwheel work so she could use them as a photo op for her site. Her site is really beautiful so I knew that she'd do a terrific job, but I'll have to admit that I was blown away by the final photos she sent my way. Amazing!!! Yes, I almost cried (and I'm not even hormonal this week)! Taking photos of my products has never been something I've excelled at - I'm usually rushing around at the last minute so the results are always a bit off par, and sometimes just plain terrible. In most instances, I don't think they do my products justice. But these photos - wow! They really make me want to buy these pretty pinwheels, especially seeing them with the hand calligraphied cards. What I've always imagined in my head is now a complete package and I have Lisa to thank for making my vision a reality for everyone else to see.

I love how she inked the seating card attachments in the perfect pink from the pinwheel.

And what beautiful lettering - this is her Laura style.

And I adore how she hung her calligraphied seating cards from these clothespin pinwheels. I can just picture these pinwheels hanging from a clothesline at an outdoor garden wedding. (Makes me want to get married all over again just so I can have my guests exclaming over these cards.)

Many of the brides who've purchased these seating card pinwheels in the past have placed my cupcake topper sized pinwheels in wheat grass on their seating card tables, but Lisa came up with her own creative idea. How cute do these pinwheels look placed into mini tin watering cans?! Once again these would look too cute at an eclectic bride's wedding.

I Dream of Buttercream ...

Okay, I don't really dream of buttercream, but I do love buttercream icing - even more than the actual cupcake, in most instances. However, Ashley from Buttercream Dreams has made me double-think my tendency for licking off the icing only and throwing out the actual cupcake. (Okay, I was exaggerating a bit -I don't throw out the entire cupcake - I may eat a bite or two of the top just like Elaine on Seinfeld. Speaking of which, the Muffin Tops episode was on the other night. Too funny. I would so go to a shop that only served muffin tops.) Okay, I digress. Back to my point, if I had one of Ashley's couture cupcakes I may just be inspired to eat the entire thing. They aren't your typical cupcakes made from cake batter - no, she actually fills many of her cupcakes with fluffs and fabulous fillings. I must mention that her mixes are even made from scratch - no boxes or mixes in her kitchen.

Take for instance the above Cookies and Cream Cupcakes, one of her specialities. She actually bakes an entire Oreo Cookie into the cupcake itself. And if that weren't enough cookie goodness, she finishes them off with Oreo crumbles and mini Oreo cookies. Now that is one cupcake that I would devour - completely!

Ashley doesn't have a shop just yet, but no worries you are able to custom order her couture cupcakes for your special occasion, or for no occasion at all! If I lived closer to Atlanta I would so be ordering a batch of the above, but since I don't I'll just have to stare longingly at the above photo while my stomach sadly growls (or shall I say cries) that she only had an oatmeal creme pie for dessert. (As if I even needed that.)

Dream Vacations

So, this week I've been playing catch-up at work. I get a ton of meetings related trade magazines that I never have the chance to go through. To be totally honest, I haven't touched any of these magazines since early February thus the pile in my office was about 2 feet tall - no kidding! Anyway, I got motivated this week (not really intentionally -we are having visitors in the office next week and thus I needed to do some clean-up. the messiest area of my office is the magazine stack thus I tackled it first.) and decided to go through my mile-high-pile. I really only like the pictures so it's kind of a quick process. While rustling through one of these publications I ran across a resort that caught my eye - The Pacuare Lodge in Costa Rica. One of the bungalows at the resort is pictured above. I've always wanted to visit Costa Rica - ever since I had to plan a 'faux' vacation to this country my sophomore year of hs for my Spanish class. It's got amazing cloud forests and cool animals - very jungly!

Above is the lodge for the resort. The photos on my blog aren't that great (their site wouldn't let me 'borrow' their photos), but visit their website and you will be amazed! It's an eco-friendly resort deep in Costa Rica's jungle. One must access the resort by white river rafting and there is no electricity. Showers are solar heated and guests' dine by candle light. One must also sleep in open air bungalows. Despite these facts, the resort appears amazing. It reminds me of Swiss Family Robinson. As a child I always loved that movie and wished that I could live like the Robinson's. I'd still like to - for several days to a week. Not sure if I could take it for a lifetime - but since I grew up camping, I can be an outdoor girl for for limited periods of time! My favorite part of the resort - their amazing honeymoon suite. Now, Roger and I already had our honeymoon 2 1/2 years ago (and don't get me wrong it was wonderful - we went to the Dominican Republic), but this place makes me want to take another one. (Is our 3 year anniversary too soon to have a second honeymoon? HaHa) Their infinity pool in the tree tops is amazing!

I loved the above resort so much that I forwarded it to a friend of mine who loves to travel. She forwarded me another equally as amazing resort property - Turtle Island in Fiji. This place is even more my style (although even more budget unfriendly then the Costa Rican property). There are secluded bungalows right on the beach. How cool is that? I love the beach and to be able to walk out your door right onto the beach would be incredible.

And look above, how romantic is that? I'm sure it costs a pretty penny - but wow!

I've just come up with a brilliant idea - maybe I can convince Roger to go along with the Costa Rica vacation (he loves rafting and all that outdoor stuff) and then get him to tack on the Turtle Island vacation for me (since I love the beach and lounging). Both of us would get our dream vacations.

I know, I know - the two properties are not all that close, but it's my 'dream' vacation that will only remain in my dreams. There is no way Roger and I could afford either one of these trips but it's been fun reviewing these properties and daydreaming. Just in case we win the lottery one day (Guess we need to start playing), I've saved both of these properties to my web favorites. :-)

Speaking of dream vacations, I found a property that is actually more budget friendly and equally as cool - MaryJanesFarm Bed and Breakfast. ( I actually found this property while blogging earlier this week.) One of the bed and breakfast's tents is pictured above. Isn't this tent too cute. Now I've tent camped many a time, but some how the inside of my tent never looked like the above. (Although I only camped when I was younger - now that I love to decorate, perhaps the next time I tent camp I'll make my tent look like this. Oh my gosh - Roger would get so annoyed with me for packing so much unnecessary stuff!)

The shower houses at the State Park we frequented while growing up so didn't look like the above. :-) How amazing is the above? I brought this vacation up to Roger and he was like, why would you pay $169 per night to stay in a tent? (Yes, I know you can buy one for much cheaper than that.) I guess he just doesn't admire the prettiness of these tents or shower rooms. I would so pay that fee! Too bad the above property is located in Idaho. If they were located closer to Indiana, I would so be dragging Roger along for a long vacation weekend.

Yes, I did check to see if there were similar properties in the Midwest - there aren't. Much to my disappointment.This did get me to thinking, maybe I could open up my own 'Tent and Breakfast' in my backyard. You are able to purchase these tent platforms and canvas tents online. (Yes, I've already done my research) Roger could built it for me and then I'd just need to decorate it! What a plan! Although, my city lot doesn't provide quite the same view as tho tent views at Mary Jane's Farm. :-)

Strawberry Delights

Hi girls. Just look at what I've found! Don't the above and below items put you in a summer mood? (Yeah, I know it's not quite summer, but I'm planning ahead!) Above is a very pretty strawberry colander. What a great idea! Just place your strawberries in this colander, rinse them, and set the colander a top the coordinating plate - it will catch all the little water droplet drippings.

And could there be any better way than to serve your freshly squeezed strawberry lemonade than in this strawberry pitcher? It's even shaped like a strawberry!

Not sure about you but I just love strawberry shortcakes in the summer. Wouldn't homemade shortcakes and piles of strawberries, ice cream, and whipped cream look absolutely yummy topped on these decadent strawberry plates?

Of course strawberry shortcakes can be a bit messy. These strawberry napkins will easily clean dirty hands - and faces. :-)

And protect your table linens from spills with the above red and white polka dot placemats. Although they are not strawberry themed - they coordinate perfectly with the strawberry theme. And, even better, they are made of plastic laminate for very easy clean-up!

I'm debating getting some of these items for Mother's day gifts. Although, maybe I'll just keep them for myself as they make bright and cheery summer serving pieces. :-)

Fabulous Finds: Felt Flower Favor Bag

Yesterday, for the first time in Indiana it really felt like spring. It was in the high 50's with lots of sun. After work I sat outside for awhile just to feel the glorious sun on my face. And I didn't even have to wear a jacket. My fleece pullover was just perfect. Today is another story (rainy and 40's), but I enjoyed yesterday while it lasted - especially since I know that spring is on it's way!

The lovely spring weather beckoned me to search for more spring related products. I can't get enough of the bright pastels and vibrant flowers that are so prevalent this time of year. While doing so I ran across the above Felt Flower Favor Bags - what a fabulous find. (For more information on these products, just click the above photo.)

If you still aren't sure how you are going to decorate your Easter tablescape and you aren't too into the bunny and egg themes that are prevalent this time of year, the above bags (filled with Easter cookies) would be a great alternative. Just fill with hand decorated cookies and place in the center of each of your placesettings. If you are hosting a more formal Easter luncheon or dinner and you'd like to assign seats just attach a little tag to each flower bag using raffia or ribbon. Your guests won't mind that you've assigned seats when they see the pretty - and yummy - bags they get to take home with them!

Don't have time to create your own Easter centerpiece? Have your local florist put together a floral centerpiece integrating tulips, lillies, daffodils, gerber daisies, or any other spring flower. Or, if you aren't hosting Easter and you are debating what to get the hostess as a hostess gift, have a spring flower bouquet sent to their house the day before Easter. Not only will this be a great surprise (right in the middle of their hectic day), they'll also have time to integrate your floral piece into their decor whether it be as their main Easter table centerpiece or as a focal piece on their buffet.

Here comes Peter Cottontail ...

This morning, while leaving my house, I met up with Mr. Peter Cottontail. He was hippidy hoppiding his way around my front yard. I almost stopped to ask him if he was my tomato biter friend from this past summer. (Roger and I planted a garden and we never got one tomato off the vine before some mysterious creature enjoyed the first bite. Needless to say we didn't enjoy a second after his/her first. ) I'm alway fascinated when I see little creatures hopping or scuttering around my yard. It often makes me wander where they live as I live in a pretty urban area, only minutes from downtown.

Seeing the cute little bunny this morning inspired me to look for some bunny themed Easter items. Isn't the above bunny cookie jar adorable? He is almost cute enough to sit on your coffee table throughout the spring months. Of course, freshly baked cookies would make him one popular piece with your guests as well. Or, place this bunny in the center of your Easter table and he would make a wonderful starting piece for your Easter tablescape. Just add some fresh florals and moss to his base.

These matching bunny napkin ring holders are just too cute to pass up too! They would be great pieces to tie the centerpiece and the outlying areas of your easter table together.

I love the soft colors of the above table runner. The light beige, celadon green and light shades of pink would work wonderfully with the above bunny pieces. This would add just a touch of spring color without outshining the beautiful pieces above. (Matching dishtowels and dishcloths are available.)

I've always wanted a set of cabbage themed plates and bowls. Although I've never wanted to invest in them as all I'd seen in the past were green and wouldn't go with a lot of my tablescapes. But, it now looks as if they are making the cabbage plates and cabbage bowls in a whitish color as well. Perfect as they will just about go with anything - including the bunny table pieces above. Plus, they almost look shabby inspired as well - another positive as I love most shabby chic pieces!

Fabulous Finds: Delicious Dessert Dinner Party Products

Anyone who really knows me knows that I love dessert. Yes, I admit it, I have a sweet tooth, or two - okay, maybe all my teeth are sweet teeth. :-) Truth be told, I love dessert even more than the meal like 95% of the time. In fact, I've been known to take really small servings of the actual meal only so I can overindulge on what is to me the best party of any meal - a sweet, and hopefully dark-chocolatey, treat! So, it wouldn't suprise most that upon seeing the above napkins at Plum Party recently, my mouth instantly started watering. The petit four pictured does look good enough to eat, doesn't it? (I only wish I could get mine to turn out as gorgeous!) So much so that I have a craving to purchase these napkins. I even have a party brewing in my head. A party centered around dessert - A Delicious Dessert Dinner Party! (Of course, the whole point of this party would be to forgo the dinner and move right along to dessert!) This event would be a wonderful one just for you and your girl friends. Have each friend bring their own favorite tempting treat and completely cover your dining room table with them. No need to sit down at the table as you'll be munching on delicacies all evening.

Ingredients for a 'Delicious Dessert Dinner Party':

* Weeks ahead of schedule mail invitations to your friends. To get them really excited about the upcoming festivities, mail them cute menu card invitations. On the inside of the card print the details of the evening instructing each guest to bring their favorite dessert to share on their favorite serving dish. You may also suggest that they bring recipe cards of the dessert along with them to share with party guests. This will get their mouths watering well before the party even begins.

* Of course you'll want to purchase the above napkins to go along with your themed party.

* If these napkins are incorporated you'll already have a built-in color scheme - raspberry pink and chocolate brown. These colors mixed together almost look good enough to eat!

* Before guest's arrive drape dining room table with layers of raspberry and chocolate colored fabrics. Just purchase several yards from your local fabric store. Don't know how to sew, no problem! When draping fabric you are easily able to hide seams or frayed edges. To create several different layers for your guest's dessert dishes, before draping fabric, scatter varying heights of boxes or books on table. Once finished, drape fabric over these items and guests won't know that you're actually hiding ugly boxes and telephone books!

* For the evening's entertainment, rent the movie Chocolat. Before guest's arrive be sure to have plenty of throw pillows arranged on the floor in the room where you will be watching the movie. Also purchase the large boxes of candy (similar to the size you buy in movie theatres - most drug or Target type stores carry these) and scatter those around the room. These boxes of candies along with plenty of drinks and maybe even large popcorn themed tubs filled with chocolate covered caramel corn will help make your dessert themed party a huge hit.

* For favors your guests can walk away with all of the recipes cards that have been brought. In addition, these Admit One Chocolates would also make a great take-away gift and memorable closure to the evening.

Fabulous Find: Unique Molded Cake Pans

While recently browsing the web, I ran across this ultra-fun giant cupcake cake pan. What child, or adult for that matter, wouldn't love being presented with this gigantic cupcake instead of a traditional sheet cake? It will surely put a grin on the guest of honor as well as all of your guest's faces. It's even large enough that it could be your tablescape centerpiece - just place the decorated cupcake on a stand as they've done in the photo! Cupcake measures: 15½" x 8¼" x 3¾". Not sure how to carry the cupcake theme through your entire party? As stated above, use this cupcake cake as your centerpiece. Scatter cake decorations, such as the fun sugared confetti pictured above, on your tabletop. For place cards, place an individual cupcake in the center of each placesetting and insert these unique cupcake toppers. Need something to keep your little guests' busy? Perhaps have them try their hand at decorating the large cupcake cake. Or, if the thought of that (or the mess they may create) frightens you - start small and have each child decorate an individual cupcake. Give a prize for the best decorated cupcakes - prettiest, most unique, scariest, etc.!

Speaking of unique birthday cake ideas, I thought the above giganto cupcake cake could not be beat. That was until I ran across this very fun lego cake pan. This would also be the perfect cake for a children's birthday party. Carry the theme all the way through and make the entire party lego themed! Use the lego cake as your centerpiece (build your own fun cake plate/stand out of legos), scatter lego pieces on the tabletop, and even make cool lego designs and prop placecards on or against them. If you are really creative, I bet you could even make lego napkin rings! Just in case the kids get bored, set up lego stations around your house to keep them busy and perhaps give a prize to the child who creates the most unique lego creation. Finally, as parting gifts, give out mini boxes of legos. Lego cake is available at bettycrocker.com.

With all this talk of cake, my mouth is really watering for a nice little bite. I wish I could run my finger over the blue icing above and actually get a taste! Now, that would be nice! Valentine's Day Tablescape Crafts

My latest issue of Better Homes and Gardens arrived last week and I've finally had a chance to browse through the pages. They had some great Valentine's Day ideas in the magazine and even more wonderful Valentine's day crafts, treats, and decor ideas on line. I loved them so much that I thought that I'd pass some of my favorites along. ~ Shana

I just adore the above wreath. This would make a great family project for a cold winter weekend day. I especially love how they've hung this wreath over the side of a dinner chair. The only thing better than one of these hung over a chair would be a wreath hung over each of the chairs at your tablescape.

And, how cute is the above? A bouquet of lollipop heart treats! Just line a few cups filled with these unique Valentine's day treats down the center of your table. After your event, guests can then walk away with these adorable, and tasty, items as favors.




I love the use of colors in this tablescape. It is fun and romantic at the same time. The fluorescent pinks and reds mixed with the yellow roses are certainly nontraditional, but at the same time so unforgettable! And the paper cones (filled with chocolates) propped in champagne glasses is another great idea!



Now, I've been known to wrap ribbon around cupcakes, but I typically ice mine. After this photo, I've realized that icing really isn't necessary! Plain powdered sugar, or even cocoa, seems to do and creates a wonderfully simple look.
